CUTips

Stop Unauthorized DC's on a Reflector

If you are using the Enhanced version 2.1.x of CU-Seeme
   1.    Launch the Listener application BEFORE starting CU
   2.    Use Listener to launch CU
   3.    In the CU-SeeMe Preferences, uncheck all Listener options.

   4.    This "should" prevent anyone from direct connecting to your IP address while you are on a reflector. You will however still be able to be dc'd if you are not connected to a reflector.

If you are using White Pine 3.12:

  1.    Click the Call Options button on the Phone Book toolbar and then select Listener.

The CU-SeeMe Call Options dialog box appears with the Listener tab displayed.

2.    Near the bottom of the tab, under the Default Listener Settings section, click the Default Settings button.
The Listener Default Settings dialog box appears.

  3.    Go to middle section labeled, Get my attention and select one of the three ring options:

No ring, Standard ring, or Distinctive ring.

  4.    If you want visual notification of an incoming call, select either the Open Notify Dialog check box or the Flash check box

  5.    Click OK to exit the Listener Default Settings dialog box.

  6.    Click OK to exit the CU-SeeMe Call Options dialog box.

If you are using Cornell v1.0

  1.    Select View

  2.    Then Preferences

  3.    Then General Tab

  4.    Check:  Confirm Incoming Calls:

We recommend that you always have this checked, unless you want to automatically answer any calls that come in. This call confirmation box will NOT pop up if you are already connected to another user or reflector. This only works when you are not connected to anyone.

Codec Tips

Have a B&W camera and Cornell?

But don't want the pixeling?
G
et softcam  and select RGB24 160 x 120.

Installing the MJPEG Codec

Pmatrix codec is no longer available

White Pine MJPEG (you need to install any WP CU version to get back the WP codec)

If you have a older version of the WP codec you can replace it with this one:

White Pine MJPEG Codec v1.13     (shift + Rt click on mouse to DL)

PIC MJPEG Codec
(No longer Free) by Pegasus Imaging (PICVideo)

Some tips on configuring PIC codec

Morgan Multimedia  MJPEG Codec

    Installing Morgan Codec for Win95

Installing Morgan Codec for Win 98

Setting up the MJPEG codec with a Colour Quickcam

These are the settings I have found that work best

1.   Set the Camera quality to HIGH and the Video Capture colour format to 1000's UNCOMPRESED.

2.   Set the Codec to White Pines MJPEG

3.   Set the image quality to less than 20% - I use 18%. If the image quality is  set higher than 20% video will just never start.
4.   Set your send rate to around 20 kbps. (I use 2 min send / 18 max send)

There are still some problems with MJPEG in that not everyone can see it, it does not work with 16-bit operating systems, and it does not work with some video cards

If you cannot see someone sending MJPEG and they show on your sender list.  Use the "EYE" Icon to close all senders, either close 10 times or leave the video closed for a few seconds, then open the MJPEG sender on their own until their video has started. You may need to repeat this process a few times.

If this fails then try the same process hitting the Stop/Start receiving video button

Intel Indeo 5.1 codec

White Pine 3.12 user and can't find it listed?
You must be in a ref.  Then click on the "Customize" button.  Next go to "configuration".    Uncheck the "Use only recommendede Codec" box.  Open the Codec menu and it should be listed

Softcam Installation for Cornell

1.  On options, choose Microsoft WDM image
2.  Capture as the default video source
3.  For the default background: default Live Video.
4.  Then in cornell choose softcam as the video driver

Other Reasons why you may not be receiving video

There are many reasons why you may not be receiving video or be receiving bad quality video. Some possibilities are listed below:

Bad Routing - This is probably the main cause. If your connection to the reflector goes through a router that is or becomes busy then your receive rates and consequently your video reception will suffer. There is nothing you can do about this except sit and wait and hope it improves, or disconnect and redial again.

Bad phone lines - This was my biggest curse until recently. If your connection to your ISP is not perfect then your modem will negotiate a slower speed until it can cope with the noise on the phone line, consequently your vid reception suffers.

Sender sending to fast - If someone is connected to the reflector with a very fast connection then their send rate can easily be way too fast for your modem to handle even if the reflector can. There is little you can do about this. You could suggest to the sender that they lower their send rate, but it is their decision.

Sender sending too slow - Once again this is out of your control, have a look at their info by right clicking their name and seeing if their send rate is set at a sensible amout (between 15 and 25 kbps) and if not you could suggest that they change their settings.

Ref running slow - Sometimes a reflector needs to be rebooted. Hopefully a ref op will notice this and do the necessary.

Unclosed video streams - remember to use the close all eye and clear your chat window occasionally. Also closing your participant window frees up a little extra bandwidth too as does clearing the chat window from time to time.

Unusual Codec - Some capture devices especially video camera capture cards (as opposed to a Quickcam) offer their own video compression codecs. Have a look at the senders Info box and see if they are using a codec that you do not recognize.

Non-CU-SeeMe Client - Not all the senders on a ref will be using CU-SeeMe shortly and you will need to have the very latest version of CU to be able to receive their vid.

MJPEG Quality set too high - See above section.

Cornel Users

If you aren't  RECEIVING video from some
Pro4 or Pro5 users

   1.  They are using mjpeg codec!      You will only see them if they are using    H.263 codec

   2.   IF they are using H.263 Codec: then it could be

Incorrect video format     they should be on 128 x 96

  3.   OR

Their send rate is too high for their connection, ask them to lower send rate: standard is 20/40

    4.  OR

Their video quality is set to high: H263 should be below 60%

White Pine Software Users:

3.12 users - Can't see SOME Pro4 and Pro5 users?

You click on their video and you get black box with "opening video stream" and never opens?

I got the fix for you!  It's once AGAIN a Direct X issue.  You might have loaded a program with newer Direct X drivers.  Well version 3.12 doesnt like the newer drivers.   So the fix is:

     1. Find the file      quartz.dll    (should be in c:\windows\system

     2. Delete the quartz.dll file (Do NOT reboot)

     3.  Re-install CU 3.12   Don't worry, you should not lose your CU information

     4.  Reboot     You should now have no problems seeing any of the Pro4 or Pro5 vids

Pro4 and Pro5 users - You will not be able to see those using:

    1.  Cornel Greyscale Codec (Black and White)

    2.  Intel Indeo Codecs (IV3 or later)

CU-Web Users -  You will not be able to see those using:

     1.  H.263 codec

     2. Cornel Greyscale codecs ( Black & White)

     3.  Intel Indeo codecs

     Cu-Web only decodes Mjpeg codecs

Other CU Problems

Modem problems:

Getting spontaneous disconnects while using White Pine Software, and unbearably slow vid streams with the Cornell v1.0?

If your WinModem uses the HSP chipset (Zoltrix and Evertek are two that use it as well as MANY other manufacturers), the fix is to either bring your resolution down to 640x480 and 256 colours or if this is not suitable.... to go into 'My Computer' ----> Control Panel --- When you click on 'system' look for the 'performance' tab.   Click that and THEN click 'graphics'.     Reduce the acceleration to near none (with a Matrox Vid Card you MUST reduce to none).   Do this before opening CU, and you should alleviate most problems.   This will cause other apps to work a bit slower but just reverse the steps when you close CU and I think your time online will be a lot more enjoyable.

No vid and modem Related:

Computer lockups:

The two most common lock-ups are usually Kernel 32 and page fault.  They are caused most often by windows paging into an adjacent memory block that is being used by another device or your swap file is not properly optimized.

If you haven't already read this page then go here and read the optimizing page.

System Reboots itself?

Check your cooling fan.  You may need a new fan or possibly even additional cooling depending on how many pheriphals you have installed

If you have overclocked your CPU then try taking it down a notch

System hangs at random intervals:

Many things can contribute to intermittent problems, including defective RAM, and an unstable power supply.   But often flaky drivers are to blame.  Many vendors have taken shortcuts in the device driver development and testing phase.  The result is often a bug-ridden first generation driver.  Some vendors release hardware without drivers, forcing you to make use with older, often 16-bit DOS-based drivers.

To solve these problems, first backup your hard disk then create an emergency boot diskette.  If you are running Win95, be sure to place your CD-ROM driver and MSCDEX.EXE file on your diskette.  Win98's Emergency Boot Diskette Wizard adds these automatically.

Next, check the Website of your computer vendor, the device vendor or Microsoft for new drivers.  The drivers that ship with hardware are seldom up to date.  In almost all cases, you can find newer, less buggy versions.

Next, search your CONFIG.SYS file for DEVICE= lines that load 16-bit device drivers.  These driver files usually have SYS extensions, but DRV or other extensions are also possible.  If you find such a line, comment it out (by inserting REM at the beginning of the line or statement).  Save the new CONFIG.SYS file and reboot.

If all goes well, your computer may inform you it's found a new device, and ask you to insert your original Windows or hardware CD to obtain newer, 32-bit drivers.  If your computer fails to boot, or a device no longer works correctly, you'll have to restore the DEVICE= lines (remove the REM ) and reboot.  It's then time to contact the manufacturer or vendor about the proper drivers or purchase newer hardware with better driver support.

You can only bring up one vid at a time:

You have White Pine 3.1.x version, and if you click on another it switches to that vid?

It's probably a Direct X problem.  WP 3.1.x doesn't like the latest DirectX drivers.

They recommend you delete the quartz.dll file, if it's version 6.x and reinstall WP 3.X with their version of it (which is v4.x).

No one can see your vid:

Here are a couple common ones I have found:

1. You are using Cornell v1.0 and you do not have the latest Mjpeg codec

2. You have a firewall installed and its preventing you from sending video
Click on your program and change it to allow CUSeeme as a "server"

Known CU Bugs and Problems

White Pines 3.1 - (Builds 21 & 25)

There are at least two very annoying bugs in version 3.1 of WhitePines Enhanced Cu-SeeMe version 3.1. These two bugs are found in build 21 and build 25. (The last two digits of the version number indicate the build number)

The Build 21 bug - The bug in build 21 is extremely annoying indeed. It causes all the chat from a participant using this version to be sent over and over again (Chat barf).  There does not seem to be any trigger for this, and sometimes it does not happen at all, but when it does I have seen as many as 30 or so lines of text repeated in the chat window, including private chat. The only cure seems to be is to leave the reflector and close CU to clear the text buffer and then rejoin the ref.

The Build 25 bug - This bug is at at least as annoying as the one above, and I have seen it cause numerous heated discussions as to whether or not someone is actually sending video. The bug manifests itself when a participant changes reflectors or conferences. On joining the second reflector their video stream will just not start. The symptoms of this on the reflector are that the sender's information will show them sending no data, even though their local statistics will show that everything is working correctly.  The fix for this once again to leave the ref, close CU, then restart CU and rejoin the ref.  Chat barf also occurs with this version.

White Pine 3.12

First time install:   It will not complete or it never executes after install?.

Try turning off ANY virus checker programs.  Go to "msconfig" also to see what else is running at startup and turn it off until you complete the install.

Chat barf:  When your chat repeats itself in the ref.  The chat buffer only holds so much text, before it spills out to the ref.  You can try clearing it by using the clear chat icon located on the chat tool bar.

But what works for me is exiting the ref and shutting down the PHONE BOOK , count to 10 and reopen and re-enter the ref.  This resets the chat buffer.

Whitepine 3.12 and USB Cameras USB-Icon.jpg (919 bytes)

Camera locks up after being on a ref
Chat is slow to type into chat box
Your video freezes intermittantly
Clicking on another vid to view, it is slow to respond to bring up

There is a video streaming problem with your USB camera and the Whitepine v3.12.  There is a fix for it and requires a change in the registry.  I have created a guide for you to make it easy.  Click on the camera above to link to it.

Whitepine 3.12 and Quickcam with Win 98  USB-Logitech-Icon.jpg (879 bytes)

Whitepine 3.12 - Lose your Participants List?

If you lose your participants list for only ONE room, then delete the contact card for that room/ref and make a fresh one.

If it is for every room you enter, then we have to do a bit of surgury:

    1.   Go to c:\windows  and find the PP000001.crd and delete that card
(It holds all  your contact card info)

    2.  Uninstall CU 3.12

    3.  Remove CU 3.12 from  the registry also....Here is how you do that:

          http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/seque/3/Registry.htm

    4.  Delete the remaining file folder from c:/Program Files

    5.  Reboot and reinstall CU 3.12.

    6.  You will have to put back all your contact cards as the above steps removed them.

This procedure has worked for all but ONE person.  If the problem persists here is an alternative direct from White Pine's files.

You will need to restore your settings to their defaults, and what you need to do is to create a new profile and adjust the settings in that one to repair the old one. Here are the instructions for doing this:

    1.  Click the 'Call Options' button on the 'PhoneBook' window.

    2.  Select "Profiles" and Click the 'New' button.

    3.  Follow the 'New Profile Assistant' through all the dialog boxes to create your new profile.
Once you are done, your new profile name will appear in the Personal Profiles list.

   4. Make sure that your OLD profile is selected as the one you are going to connect with.

    5. Connect to the conference or other party that you are having problems with
then go to "Customize", "General" and make sure you DO NOT have the
"Always use these settings for this connection" checked, or the "Show Participants List"
checked. Click ok and close out of that connection.

    6. When this is done you will need to go back into the "CU-SeeMe PhoneBook"
and select the 'New Profile' and select it as your
Primary logon.

    8. Go connect to the conference or other party that you are having problems with using the new
profile,  you should see the default window layout for that conference connection, which should
appear with  the Participants List as normal at this point.

    9. You will need to go to "Customize" from your connection at this point and select the "General"
tab  and then make sure you place the check in "Always use these settings for this connection"
         and  "Show Participants list".

Your system is now back to the way it should be no matter which Profile you wish to use.

Cornell

1.  "Unsupprted Video Capture Setting"

Trying to install cornell and get this error?    Change size from QCIF to 160 x 120

This problem was posted on Cornell's CU mailing list, thought it might be useful for others to know about: "I am getting people who complain that when they leave a reflector they are getting DC requests constantly.  Well after some legwork (done by "Bomb") we found that when a Cornell user leaves the ref, somehow afterwards gets DC requests from people who are still connected to the ref.   OR if a user's connection times out, the then get DC requests from people on the ref - if they answer the request - guess what happens? They're BACK on the ref !!!  [using Eref 1.0.7b9]

Pro4 Core Upgrade to   4.2.0.29

Pro5

When trying to install Pro5 do you get:

  1. "Invalid version of Runtime Libraries"  You will need to update the Microsoft .dll Library.

  Go here http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q259/4/03.asp

  OR

  2. "Setup detected that you have an old version of the Microsoft Library Runtime (MFC Dlls) installed on your system.

3.   Sometimes upgrading to IE 5.5 fixes the problem

AOL v5.0

Getting an "IP error" message?  You probably installed v5.0 over v4.0   which causes multiple interfaces.  Uninstall both versions and re-install v5.0

Also make sure you are not running McAfee as it has a conflict with that program.  Disable the Vshield and Scan in the toolbar.  You can also "end" Vwshin under the Alt+Ctl+Del function (close program)

Black and White Vid Conflicts?

Check if you have Quicktime 3.0, because you if have QuickTime 3.0 beta installed, build 15 has a bug and the b&w codec conflicts with QT3.0.

Cameras

Q. What types of cameras work best

A.   Cameras that operate with video capture cards generally perform better than parallel port cameras. Cameras that connect to a video capture card use less of your computer's processor than cameras that connect through your  computer's parallel port.  If you use a laptop, the keyboard is not amplified enough to support color cams and the video suffers.   However, parallel port cameras generally cost less than video capture cards, although most video capture cards allow you to plug in a regular camcorder.

Black-and-white cameras generally perform better than color cameras. Because color cameras must send more data, black-and-white cameras will generally offer better performance and clarity than color cameras.  You can use Mjpeg codec on BW cameras with any WP 3.x version and you will not pixel.

Bi-directional parallel ports perform better than uni-directional ports. Computers with a bi-directional (ECP or EPP) parallel port perform noticeably better with parallel video cameras than computers with a uni-directional parallel port.

USB cameras are great as they can be utilized on a laptop as well as the desktop so that you dont have to buy 2 cameras.  The Kodak 323 is a exceptional camera which I use myself.  Great color controls and versatility and works wonderfully on my laptop.

Quick note: If you are using Cornel's CuSeeMe you will need to have a 24-bit video card so that Cornel can recognize the camera.

Q. How can I improve video performance and quality?

A.   Here are a few suggestions for improving video performance and quality:

Do not run CUSeeMe  with another program that uses video.    With some cameras, low light slows down the computer.   If your camera is located in a dark room, your computer might run very slowly with the Local Video window open.

Some cameras need to use a lot of the processor's power in order to capture video in low light.  To remedy this, increase the amount of light.   Minimizing the local video window can improve performance. You might experience better video quality and performance if you minimize (or hide) your local video window during a call.

Use 16-bit or 24-bit color for best results.  Video performs best when your color depth (color palette) is set to the maximum possible setting for your monitor. To set color depth, open the Display icon in Control Panel, click the Settings tab, and set Color Palette to the highest setting available.

Q.  My USB Camera will not work with Cornel version of CU-SeeMe, why is that?

A  Cornel does not support the  32bit color format.  It only supports 24bit at 640 x 480 resolution.

Hopefully you have a video card that allows for 24-bit format.  Change the settings to allow for 24-bit applications.  Some USB cameras have a place where you can change to 24-bit in their setup.  With others you will have to change the properties of your video card to 24-bit.  It is under settings.

Also USB is not supported with earlier versions of Win95.  Win95 OS/2 or   version B can support it with some tweaking.  Usually the USB camera comes with some additional drivers needed to get the USB camera operating.  If not check out your camera manufacturer's website for the update drivers.  Win98 supports USB

With Cornell Ver 1.0 and  Windows 98 ---- cannot send video. The first thing to check is whether or not it supports the required modes for Cornell:

View -> Preferences -> Video -> Video Format.

Make sure you can select 160x120 with either RGB16 or RGB24 (16-bit RGB/24-bit RGB) with a color codec if not, see if you can select YUV9/YVU9.

8mm Camera & ATI cards

You will need Softcam for the ATI All-In-Wonder Cards.

ATI All in Wonder uses WDM drivers.  Won't work on Cornell unless you do

You will freeze up on White Pine 3.1x(on Win98) unless you use SoftCam to convert the WDM format to the AVICAP format that CU can use.

Does have problems while running Winamp or Napster with it.

Intel Create and Share USB

With Cornell:  You will need Softcam

With White Pine:     Vid won't move. Solution is to rename the quartz.dll file and reinstal CU..... any version of it above 5.0 won't work on that cam.  Quartz.dll, either rename it or delete it, version 5.0 or above won't work, so after renaming it and reinstalling 3.1.2, it puts the quartz.dll back to version 4.x.

Kodak DVC 323 USB

Not compatable with Cornell.  Try changing to 24bit on your video card.  If that fails try Softcam

Works with White Pine 3.x and 4.x versions  If using Windows98 you may have to turn off the video streaming.

Logitech Express USB

Will not work with either Cornell or White Pine 3x.  Conflict with Windows 98 and USB support.    Apparently the only reason Quickcam ships CU software with the product is that they are obligated to because of old policy. They are trying to figure out the problems... they say windows 2000 will probably solve all the issues.

The QuickCam Express IS compatible with CU-SeeMe Pro 4.

The installation process for the QuickCam Express loads two drivers, a Logitech driver and the WDM Image Capture driver. The WDM Image Capture driver is the one that must be selected for use with CU-SeeMe Pro.

There is also a video streaming issue between the CU-SeeMe Pro program and the QuickCam Express (USB) drivers.

To compensate for this you need to disable streaming video in CU-SeeMe Pro for this camera.

There is a easy-to-use patch and instructions for both issues.

Logitech Quick Cam Home or Quick Cam Web USB

Has a video streaming problem with White Pine 3.x and 4.x.

"Logitech QuickCam Home software updates can be found by using the Logitech Internet Update (LIU) feature built into your QuickCam Home software (camware)."

Problems with Win98.  It uses the newer WDM model for drivers, and the older AVICAP format is required for CU.  Both Cornell and WP 3.x require the AVICAP format. The implementation of AVICAP in the Win98 WDM drivers is shakey at best.  It will work for some cams, and cause all sorts of unpredictable problems for others

Try using Softcam to convert the WDM format to AVICAP.
